Post subject: A2 Jetta Cruise Control Problem
Archived from groups: rec>autos>makers>vw>watercooled (more info?)

Hi:

I have a 1992 Jetta turbo diesel, manual 5-speed. Recently, when I was
driving on the highway, I engaged the cruise control by switching it to the
ON position. I was at 100km/h (5th gear) and pushed in the SET lever. The
cruise control engaged and the speed was set. Then I had to brake slightly,
so the speed decreased to about 80km/h. Then I decided to resume the speed
and selected RES by sliding it to the left, I didn't change the gear. The
speed picked up nicely and it reached 100km/h for a second and then it
started to decelerate. I couldn't understand what happened and I did see a
bit of smoke from the exhaust in my rear view mirror when it was going from
80km/h to 100km/h. After that, I tried to engage the cruise control many
times by pushing in the SET button, even switching the cruise off/on and
then SET, but the cruise wouldn't engage and hold the speed. I checked the
fuse box for a blown fuse, it was OK, however, from the owner's manual, I
checked the amperage of the brake light/cruise control fuse and it should be
20A. The installed fuse was 10A so I thought that might be a problem. I
changed the fuse to a 20A and re-tried but no luck. Any idea what could be
wrong and how can I solve the problem?

Thanks in advance,

Amit.

Check the switches on the clutch and brake pedals.

How do I check the switches on the clutch and brake pedals? I don't see any
switches on these pedals?

I have had cruise control on four of my cars including my 2002 NB TDI.
I have never owned an auto.

I can't say about your 92, but adding it after the fact can be a real
pain.

They are there somewhere. The brake pedal may even have two (one for
the brake lights) I have found them in several cars, but I would not know
where they are in the A2, but hopefully someone will be able to help.
Normally they are near where the pedal pivots or on the other side of the
firewall.

Yup, cruise on a manual. It disengages if you brake or shift gears. I have
it on my 1991 Golf GL. It was a stripper model, with cruise installed for
some reason.... my dad didn't want it in 1991, so he refused to pay for
it... best free cruise control I have ever used Wink. I really with it was
more full featured, there is no decelleration function on it.... I don't
think I have it on the 99' TDI tho (auto Sad )

Check the servo on the injection pump. The one on my Carat was torn and that
caused funny cruise problems.

Peter:

Can you guide me to where this injection pump and the servo are located on a
turbo diesel? Is it easy to replace, something like a do-it-yourself
maintenance task?

Thanks,

Amit.

To get to the switches, you need to lay on your back and look up under the
dash. There is a bracket in front of the pedals. The brake pedal should have
2 switches on it, one for the brake light and one for the cruise. The clutch
should have one switch that looks the same as one the brake switches. Each
of these two switches should have a vacuum line and an electrical connection
to it. Make sure the vacuum isn't leaking and the electrical connection is
good.

Not sure how else to check the switches, but this might give you a place to
start.

Good Luck
